Victorian Diamond Running Dog Brooch

A delightful Victorian brooch depicting a running dog, most likely a greyhound or whippet, its body entirely pavé set with rose cut diamonds in silver, backed with gold. The dog is captured at full stretch with legs extended and ears flying back, perfectly conveying the speed and grace of a sighthound in motion. A cabochon ruby eye adds a flash of life to the piece. The legs and ears are set with smaller rose cuts in fine grain settings, while the body carries larger stones that catch light beautifully. The reverse shows the typical Victorian construction of silver over gold, with a simple pin fitting and C-catch. Dogs were popular subjects in Victorian jewellery, symbolising loyalty, fidelity and companionship. Greyhounds and whippets in particular appealed to the sporting set. This one has survived in excellent condition with all stones present and secure.
