A Victorian five-stone diamond ring set with graduated old mine cut diamonds in silver-topped yellow gold. The five principal stones are estimated to weigh 2.5 carats in total and are graded approximately H/I colour and SI clarity. Each diamond is held in an individual claw setting with small rose-cut diamond spacers between them. The shoulders feature carved scrollwork in the classic Victorian manner, with pierced and chased decoration tapering into a plain yellow gold shank.
The diamonds in this ring are genuine antique cuts, shaped by hand rather than machine. Old mine cuts are characterised by their cushion-shaped outlines, high crowns, small tables and large culets. They were cut to maximise brilliance in candlelight rather than modern electric lighting, giving them a softer, warmer sparkle than contemporary diamonds. Each stone in this ring shows the slight irregularities and individual character that distinguish hand-cut diamonds from their modern counterparts.
