An Edwardian cluster ring featuring a cabochon opal surrounded by old cut diamonds in an elegant elongated navette shape. The opal displays excellent play of colour with flashes of pink, green and blue moving across its surface. The surrounding diamonds are set in white metal with a scalloped edge, creating that soft, romantic appearance so characteristic of the Edwardian era.
The shoulders are set with further small diamonds, continuing the sparkle down toward the yellow gold shank. The gallery work on the reverse is particularly fine, with delicate pierced openwork that allows light to enter the stones while showcasing the craftsmanship of the period. This attention to detail on parts of the ring that would never normally be seen is a hallmark of quality Edwardian jewellery.
The Edwardian period (1901-1910) produced some of the most refined and delicate jewellery ever made. Platinum was coming into wider use, allowing jewellers to create lighter, more intricate designs. This ring, with its fine proportions and elegant gallery, is a lovely example of the style.
